Every press you made up there went through three parts.

The keycap

The part your finger lands on. Its face is dished so the fingertip settles in the middle, and the legend sits on that face where you read it from above.

  • A dished face, printed with its legend
  • One accent cap, on Escape
  • Pull it off and the switch is underneath

The switch

The part that travels. A linear switch slides straight down. A tactile switch has a bump partway. A clicky switch has the bump and makes a sound at it. The selector above changes which one the page plays and how far the key sinks.

  • Linear: one smooth stroke to the bottom
  • Tactile: a bump you feel, then the rest of the travel
  • Clicky: the bump, and a click you hear

The case

The part on the desk. The switches clip into a plate, the plate sits over the board, and the case holds all of it. The case is what you hear in the room: the sound of a key is mostly the sound of the case it bottoms out in.

  • Plate: the switches clip into it
  • Board: every key is a contact on it
  • Case: the tray that everything sits in

Materials, the switch fitted, layout options and weight are published when KEY-01 ships. The board drawn above is a 61-key study of the layout.
