A silent retreat above Pokhara

Thulo Dhunga

Three, seven or ten nights without speaking, in a stone house on the ridge above Phewa lake.

A stone house, a ridge, and no words for a while.

Thulo Dhunga means big stone. The house is built against one, 1,600 m up the Sarangkot ridge, with the Annapurna range to the north and Phewa lake below.

You arrive on a Thursday, hand your phone to the office, and keep silence until the last morning. Meals, sitting, walking and work are laid out for you, so there is nothing to decide.

The meditation hall

First bell 05:30

Silence from arrival to the last morning

Through the hall window

The lake does the talking.

One day, the same every day.

The bell keeps time so you do not have to. Nobody checks that you go to every sitting. Most people find that they want to by the third morning.
